What has the Resurrection got to do with us?

Light a Candle to begin your prayer:

Almighty God open my mind and heart to your word as I read of your gift of the Resurrection.  Amen

Read 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses 20-26

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.  For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being;  for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.  Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Reflection on Bible Reading:

In St Paul’s day, which was about 30 years after Jesus’ death, people were asking; ‘Well all this stuff about Jesus dying and rising again is all very nice but what has that got to do with me?’ Today’s reading is St Paul’s answer. Jesus’ resurrection is a preview of what will happen to all of us. Yesterday we talked of Jesus as the New Adam, and in his resurrection Jesus shows us our own fate. Jesus is raised and transformed, just like the butterfly. At our own death we will be raised and transformed to be like Jesus. This is the New Covenant, God has sent a New Adam, who has shown us what God will do with us after our death.

Here is God’s promise to us and the crux of the whole Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God was always faithful to his side of the bargain Israel was not. But, remember that the covenant with Abraham was unconditional, God would be his God no matter what. Also, remember that God promised to make Abraham a father of many nations, not just one. In the New Covenant made in Jesus’ blood on the cross, the Old one is opened to a New Israel.  The New Israel being the whole of humanity. But what difference can any of this make in the here and now?

Pray this prayer aloud:

Lord Jesus

in your resurrection death is defeated

and everything is made new

Enable us to recognise you today

To build heaven on earth.

Amen
