God promises to be our Father

Light a Candle to begin your prayer:

Almighty God open my mind and heart to your word as I read of your love for me in creation Amen

 Genesis Chapter 17 verse 1-8

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’ Abram fell face down, and God said to him,  ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations.  No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.  I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.  I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.  The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’

Reflection on Bible Reading:

This is the story of the call of Abraham and covenant with God. Covenant is a contract like a marriage or adoption of a son. Later Abraham isn’t very grateful he laughs at God and doesn’t believe. But, God still makes the covenant with him. The contract says, God will be the God of all of his descendants and give him the land to live in. Notice also that this is a one sided deal there are no conditions for Abraham to fulfil. Or at least for Christians (I don’t have to be circumcised). We too have the same covenant with God as Abraham. God creates us because he loves us and is our father. Like any good father God loves us first in the hope we will return his love.

Pray this prayer aloud:

By the word of our Lord the heavens were made
By the spirit of our Lord was life begun
By the wisdom of our Lord his laws were laid
By the love of our Lord was born his Son
By the grace of our Lord mankind was saved
By the power of our Lord the victory was won Amen
