Light a Candle to begin your prayer:
Almighty God open my mind and heart to your word as I read of your love for me in creation Amen
The Gospel of John Chapter 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Reflection on Bible Reading:
The Word of God is who he is. The word in Greek which the bible was written in mean Logos. It is from this word that we get the word logic. The order or logic of our universe is what gives light and life to us all. Also the word of God is that he loves us and that love brings light, order and life to all things. Notice how this poem from the beginning of John’s Gospel is similar to the hymn at the beginning of Genesis. The wonder of all this is that the Word of God becomes flesh, become a person in the birth of Jesus. Something that we will look at later, but for now just reflect on the Word or logic of God that brings light and life to all things.
Pray this prayer aloud:
By the word of our Lord the heavens were made
By the spirit of our Lord was life begun
By the wisdom of our Lord his laws were laid
By the love of our Lord was born his Son
By the grace of our Lord mankind was saved
By the power of our Lord the victory was won Amen
